And then they asked that you allow them to send to us for authority about all the conditions of peace and friendship announced by you, and you allowed them to do this... Those same merchants of yours who were detained in our land without any guilt, you ask to voluntarily release them with everything property and thereby give you proof of our inclination and readiness for friendship.

Your gentlemen, as our ambassadors report... told them on your behalf that you will make peace with us only if we cede to you the entire Livonian land to the last inch, that Velizh, Usvyat and Ozerishte are all already with you... and that we must destroy the city of Sebezh and also pay you four hundred thousand gold chervonets for your loss, which you equipped when going to fight our lands. Passing the Unified State Exam in history is a prerequisite for admission to a number of prestigious professions: advertising and marketing, tourism business, law, journalism. Last year, 21% of all graduates chose this subject; But not everyone manages to pass this test with dignity. What's the catch?

The Unified State Examination in history covers the entire period from the era of the first ancient Russian princes to the reforms of the 21st century. All tasks must be completed in 235 minutes (this is almost 3 hours; time, if distributed rationally, is quite enough).

History this year is taken in the form of an exam consisting of two parts:

  • Part I, consisting of 19 multiple choice questions;
  • and part II, which includes 6 tasks that involve the integrated use of students’ knowledge and skills.

11th grade takes an exam on the same topics as 9th grade graduates; but the level of complexity is almost an order of magnitude higher. In the Unified State Examination in History there are no test items in the usual sense of the word; all questions require a multiple-choice answer. Tasks are divided into 3 levels according to degree of difficulty:

  • Basic level (in the codifier it is marked with the letter “B”) – contains 16 tasks;
  • Advanced level (“P”) – 8 questions;
  • And a high level (B), which assumes knowledge beyond the school course: includes 7 tasks.

The passing threshold this year is 9 primary points (or 32 secondary, “test”) points. For a conditional “four” you need to score at least 24 primary (50 test) points. “Five” starts from 39 primary points.

In total, you can get 55 primary points for the exam: 31 for the first part, 24 for the second. In this case, task No. 25, if performed correctly, gives 11 points (almost half the “cost” of the entire second part).

The early examination period is scheduled for April 2018, while the main stage will take place in early June. The exact date of the exam will be known at the end of November.

Planned changes

There are no official changes to the Unified State Exam in History 2018. The structure adopted in 2017, the formulation of topics and the principles for assessing answers have been preserved. Explicit changes to the Unified State Exam in history are planned only from next year. The Ministry of Education insists on the inclusion of history among the core subjects, along with the Russian language and mathematics. So 2018 may be the last year that history surrenders by choice.

The history demo caused some concern: the 2018 Unified State Exam, compared to 2017, will be more difficult, not least due to the increase in the number of questions requiring knowledge of General History. A significant part of the questions, especially the second part, are aimed at additional lessons with a tutor.

In the first part, you need to give a short answer to each question. This could be a word (or phrase), name, date, location or event. All these questions are aimed at testing knowledge of historical facts, as well as basic skills. In this part, the student will be offered several types of tasks for each of the time sections:

  • Establishing a chronological sequence (question No. 1);
  • Selecting the correct items from the list (No. 7);
  • Establishing correspondence between a historical fact and its characteristics (No. 2, 5, 9, 11, 17);
  • Finding a pattern according to which a number of historical terms or dates are formed (No. 3);
  • Determination based on the given characteristics of a historical fact: date, title, name, term, etc. (No. 4, 8, 10);
  • Brief analysis of the text with the choice of correct judgments from the proposed list (No. 6, 12);
  • Working with graphic material (No. 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19)

Part 2 contains:

  • 3 tasks testing how well students have learned to work with historical texts (questions 20 – 22);
  • 2 tasks in which you will have to determine cause-and-effect relationships, argue your point of view, analyze historical facts and points of view (No. 23, 24);
  • And an essay on historical topics on one of the proposed eras (No. 25).

The last task requires the student to use all the knowledge and skills acquired in history lessons.

Demo to help students

To successfully prepare for the exam, you need to start working from the first months of the school year. The demo version of the Unified State Examination in history has already been published. As in previous years, this is what you need to focus your preparation on.

The demo consists of three parts:

  • Task list;
  • Codifier with answers and explanations to the evaluation criteria;
  • And a specification that indicates all the topics the knowledge of which is necessary to pass the exam.

Answer forms are also posted there, with examples showing how to fill them out.

You can download a demo version of history using the links below or the FIPI website, where both demo versions of the current year and an open database of tasks for all periods of Russian history are posted.

  • Download demo: ege-2018-ist-demo.pdf
  • Download the archive with the specification and codifier: ege-2018-ist-demo.zip

Pass the exam with maximum points: subtleties of preparation

The ideal algorithm for successfully passing the Unified State Exam is as follows:

  • Download the demo version of the Unified State Exam 2018;
  • Carefully review all the tasks, write down the most difficult types of questions for yourself - these are the ones you will need to pay the most attention to in the future;
  • Study the Unified State Exam specification in history (it contains a detailed list of topics the knowledge of which is necessary to obtain a minimum score);
  • Regularly test your knowledge by solving all existing demo versions of the Unified State Exam.

To test your knowledge, it is advisable to prepare a selection of options for the Unified State Exam 2018 with answers and a detailed analysis of the tasks. This could be a paper guide to preparing for the exam by Labeznikova and Rutkovskaya or a website where you can train online.

One of the elective subjects, which is indicated by the graduate in the application submitted before February 1, is the Unified State Exam in History 2018.

  1. Specification (description of the work, lists the necessary documents, reflects the structure of the Unified State Examination in history, provides a plan for the KIM version).
  2. Codifier (a list of skills and topics that are tested on the Unified State Exam in history. The codifier has an appendix that lists all the events in the history of foreign countries that will be tested in tasks No. 1 and No. 11).
  3. A demo version of the Unified State Exam in history (one version of the Unified State Exam in history), with which you need to start preparing for the state exam in history.

In the first part:

  • ability to work with historical sources and texts;

History is the science of facts

History is a subject that requires knowledge. You can know a lot, but it’s almost impossible to pass history well without knowing the facts. Need to know:

  1. dates, years of certain events;
  2. facts, events, processes and phenomena;
  3. historical figures;
  4. facts of cultural history;
  5. it is necessary to navigate the cause-and-effect relationships.

Learn more about long-answer assignments

It is clear that eleventh graders still have little life experience, and some things are difficult for them to analyze or compare. But in tasks with a detailed answer, knowledge of facts that are studied in the course of a school subject is tested. The age of students, of course, leaves an imprint on the understanding of these facts. Also, children do not always have the desire to delve into historical sources and understand the cause-and-effect relationships of events.

There were no changes in the work structure in 2017. There is only one change in task number 25 (this is a historical essay). The requirements have been specified and the evaluation criteria have changed slightly.

In a historical essay, you need to write a consistent, coherent text, that is, a mini-essay about one of the periods of history (to choose from three).

There are certain requirements for the essay:

  • the work must present at least two processes or phenomena within the period chosen by the student;
  • two individuals must be indicated, their roles in these events, processes, and phenomena characterized;
  • at least two cause-and-effect relationships must be indicated;
  • historical terminology should be used;
  • You can't make factual mistakes.

Time to complete the work is 3 hours 55 minutes (235 minutes).

The maximum primary score that can be scored for completing the entire work is 55 points. These 55 points are converted into test scores using a special scale.

What difficulties do those taking the Unified State Exam in History encounter?

As a rule, the following tasks in the first part present difficulty:

  • dedicated to the history of the Great Patriotic War (No. 8);
  • on knowledge of historical personalities, historical figures (No. 9);
  • on knowledge of the facts of cultural history (No. 17);
  • for the analysis of illustrative material (No. 18 and No. 19).

The second part with a detailed answer also contains a task that turns out to be difficult for 11th grade students. This is an argumentation task (No. 24), where a certain debatable point of view that exists in historical science is presented, and graduates need to give 2 arguments from the point of view of supporters of this position and 2 arguments from the point of view of opponents.

The Unified State Exam model in history is flexible; it has been improved over the course of several years. This is due to the response of public opinion - the opinion of applicants, teachers, educators, and the expert community. Particular attention is paid to changes in the Unified State Exam and policies, since the life of society is constantly changing, which should be reflected in the tasks of the state exam in history.

The date for the Unified State Examination in History will be known in January 2018.

You can find out about the results of the Unified State Exam in history in 2018 in your general education organization or on the official website of the Unified State Exam.

Tips for preparing for the Unified State Exam in history can be found here:

Rosobrnadzor and the Federal Institute of Pedagogical Measurements (FIPI), which develops control measurement materials (CMM) for Unified State Examination participants, have prepared a new series of publications telling graduates about what awaits them in the exams. What is the examination paper in a particular subject? What tasks can Unified State Examination participants encounter? What should you pay attention to when preparing for the exam? How to avoid annoying mistakes and what to focus on when doing exam work? The series of publications about the Unified State Exam 2018 opens with a story about an elective subject - history.

The Unified State Examination in History is an optional exam. It is required for admission to universities in such specialties and areas of training as “History”, “Political Science”, “International Relations”, “Tourism”, “Arts and Humanities”, “Art History”, “Social Work”, “Organization” work with youth", "Religious Studies", "Theology", "Regional Studies of Russia" and others.

The minimum Unified State Exam score in history, below which universities cannot set a passing threshold for applicants, is 32 test points. 3 hours 55 minutes (235 minutes) are allotted to complete the examination work. You are not allowed to bring additional materials for the exam.

Each version of the history examination paper consists of two parts and includes 25 tasks that differ in form and level of difficulty. The structure and content of the 2018 exam paper has not changed compared to the 2017 model.

Part 1 contains 19 tasks with a short answer, which can be a sequence of numbers written without spaces or other separators, a word, a phrase (also written without spaces or other separators).

Part 2 contains 6 tasks with detailed answers. Answers to these tasks are given in free form in accordance with the requirements of the tasks. This part presents tasks related to the analysis of a historical source, any historical problem, situation, a task to argue the given point of view on any historical problem, as well as a task involving writing a historical essay.

The examination paper tests knowledge in the course of Russian history, as well as in the course of the history of foreign countries from ancient times to the present. All events from the history course of foreign countries, the knowledge of which can be tested in the Unified State Examination in history, are listed in the appendix to the Codifier of content elements and requirements for the level of training of graduates of educational organizations, posted on FIPI website. Knowledge of the history of foreign countries is tested only in two tasks - 1 and 11.

In the examination paper you will encounter tasks to test your knowledge of chronology, historical terminology, historical facts (events, processes and phenomena), historical personalities, facts of cultural history. The tasks also test the ability to analyze textual historical sources, historical situations, work with a historical map (diagram), illustrative material, information presented in table form, and argue a point of view on any historical issue.

Task 25, a historical essay, is complex in nature: it tests a number of skills, including the ability to establish cause-and-effect relationships between historical events, phenomena and processes, characterize the role of an individual in historical events, compose a consistent coherent text on historical topics, and others.

In the process of writing the exam paper, try to complete all the tasks, including the long-answer tasks of Part 2. Often, graduates who are not very confident in their own abilities refuse to complete the long-answer tasks. However, these tasks can bring additional points even to not very well prepared Unified State Exam participants. Task 21 from part 2, in which you need to write out information presented in it explicitly from the text, according to statistics, is the simplest in the exam paper. In addition, it is quite easy to score two primary points for a historical essay: you need to choose one of the three periods of history presented in the task and indicate any two events, phenomena or processes related to this period.

Graduates applying for a high score should pay special attention to preparing to complete tasks on working with a historical map and illustrative material. It is extremely important to correctly attribute the map (to establish what period of history it belongs to and what events are depicted on it). You need to learn how to work with the map legend. It must also be remembered that the map contains a significant amount of information and, for example, when completing task 16, in which it is required to determine three correct judgments out of six presented, the correctness/falseness of some of these judgments can only be determined from the information presented on the map.

When completing tasks to analyze illustrative material (18 and 19), you must carefully study the presented images. Task 18 always involves considering all the details of the image (caricature, postage stamp, coin, poster, etc.), as they can be useful in determining the correctness/falseness of the given judgments. In task 19, you need to select two of four images according to the named characteristic, which most often requires recognizing cultural monuments by certain elements of the image.

When completing task 24 on argumentation, which, according to statistics, is the most difficult in the exam paper, you must remember that the arguments must be complete. A complete argument always includes a historical fact (or has obvious support for a historical fact) and an explanation that connects that fact to the point being argued. This explanation should contain information about why this fact can be used to confirm or refute the point of view given in the assignment.

When writing a historical essay, you need to try to fulfill the requirements specified in the assignment as accurately as possible. For example, the characterization of the role of an individual, according to the requirements of the assignment, consists of indicating a specific action of the individual that significantly influenced the course or result of the events, processes or phenomena specified in the essay. This means that if a graduate, when characterizing a person’s role, indicates a process (for example, commanding an army), and not a specific action, then such a characterization will not be accepted. The assessment of the events of the selected period must be indicated precisely from the point of view of their influence on the further history of Russia. This means that generalizing statements (for example, “in this period (1928 - 1941) many new factories and factories were built”) will not be accepted as evaluation criteria, but only those that reflect the impact on subsequent eras will be accepted (for example, “during this period (1928 – 1941), the defense-industrial complex was created, which became one of the factors in the victory of the USSR in the Great Patriotic War”).

When writing a historical essay, it is important to avoid factual errors. To do this, firstly, you should not indicate facts, years, terms, cause-and-effect relationships, etc., the knowledge of which you doubt. Secondly, you need to carefully monitor the wording you use when writing your essay. Some incorrectly worded statements may contain factual errors. For example, the wording “A.A. Zhdanov criticized the poems of Akhmatova and Zoshchenko” contains a factual error.

Successful preparation for passing the Unified State Exam in History is impossible without mastering knowledge of history: facts, events, phenomena, historical figures, the most important cause-and-effect relationships. It is necessary to take into account that the effectiveness of memorizing material is greatly influenced by the graduate’s interest in studying history. If a graduate is interested in history, then, undoubtedly, he will be able to prepare for the exam more successfully than a graduate who studies the subject solely for the sake of entering a university. Those who love history and study it will pass the exam well! We wish you success in the exam!
