Young people know geography worse than people over 40, the Russian Geographical Society found

ALL-RUSSIAN GEOGRAPHICAL DICTANT - 2016 was held today in all 85 constituent entities of the Russian Federation.

This is already the second All-Russian geographical dictation. It took place at specially prepared sites in universities, schools, libraries, scientific institutes, and children's centers. Almost 1.7 thousand sites for everyone.

The first dictation took place in 2015. The initiator of it was the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Society, President of Russia Vladimir Putin, and the organizer was the Russian Geographical Society.

Deputy Executive Director of the Russian Geographical Society Ilya Gurov said that last year almost all young people wrote a dictation with bad marks, that is, 48% of young people scored less than 50 points, but people over forty who received their education in the mid-1970s scored 50-60 points.

The main building of Moscow State University became the central platform for dictation in Moscow. M.V. Lomonosov, where the action was held by TV presenter Dmitry Guberniev. Famous scientists, TV presenters, athletes and public figures took part in the event.

The President of the Russian Geographical Society, Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu also took part in the All-Russian Geographical Dictation.
He also added that “you can’t prepare for such issues overnight.”
The President of the Russian Geographical Society thanked the rector of Moscow State University Viktor Sadovnichy for his hospitality, as well as everyone who took part in the dictation.

The dictation is compiled in three versions for the regions of Central Russia, Siberia and the Far East. Each of them includes 30 tasks, which are divided into three blocks. The first consists of questions on knowledge of geographical concepts and terms; the second is aimed at testing knowledge about the location of geographical objects on the map; the third offers to recognize a geographical object from excerpts from works of art. The maximum score you can get for a dictation is 100 points.

One of the main principles of the action is anonymity. You do not need to indicate your name on the assignment and answer forms. Participants were asked to write only their age, occupation, attitude to geography (for example, a student or teacher at a specialized university) and some other information. This information is necessary in order to evaluate and analyze the results obtained.

A list of regional sites with addresses is published on the website of the Russian Geographical Society. Also, if you sent an application for registration of a regional site to the address [email protected] and did not find your organization in the list of sites, or if you did not receive the question forms and instructions for organizing the Dictation, you can call the phone numbers listed on the website.

Have you written a geographical dictation?

If you haven’t written, don’t worry! You can write online!
The online dictation will last until November 23 inclusive and will end at 14:00 Moscow time.
The dictation time is 45 minutes. Your result will be shown immediately after completing the online dictation.
Good luck!
Let's all write together and share the results! Hooray)

At the initiative of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Society, President of Russia Vladimir Putin, on November 1, 2015, a large-scale educational event aimed at assessing the level of geographic literacy of the population - the All-Russian Geographical Dictation - took place in the Russian Federation for the first time. The organizer of the dictation was the Russian Geographical Society.
The dictation took place in all regions of our country, at 210 specially prepared sites. Anyone could take part in the event, regardless of age, education and field of activity. 44,365 people came to regional sites to write a dictation “offline”. Another 27,564 people took the test online on the website of the Russian Geographical Society. Thus, the total number of dictation participants is about 72,000 people.
FOR REFERENCE. The average score for dictation in Russia was only 55 points, in school terminology - this is a three. It’s even more sad that 48% of the participants wrote the dictation below the average level, that is, they received a C minus or a D. In general, the results of the first Geographical Dictation indicate that Russians have a very mediocre knowledge of the geography of their country, while schoolchildren and students demonstrated a level of geographical knowledge below the national average.
The results of the dictation were taken into account by the Russian Geographical Society when preparing a new Concept for the Development of Geographical Education, which the Russian Geographical Society is developing jointly with the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
Taking into account the high public interest and the large number of positive reviews received by the Russian Geographical Society, it was decided to make the All-Russian Geographical Dictation a regular event. The second All-Russian Geographical Dictation is scheduled for November 20, 2016. The dictation will take place in all 85 constituent entities of the Russian Federation, at regional sites in universities, schools, libraries, scientific institutes, children's centers, etc.
As in 2015, the dictation text is compiled in three versions for the regions of the Far East, Siberia and Central Russia. The dictation questions will be devoted, first of all, to the geography of Russia.
