Long before the official announcement Mass Effect 2, the novel was published in July 2008 Mass Effect: AscensionMass Effect: Ascension"), which was supposed to build a plot bridge between the original game and the sequel. However, it turned out that both Ascension games are connected only by a common universe, a couple of familiar names and one key character.

During the course of Mass Effect, Captain Shepard almost at every turn encountered the machinations of the human nationalist organization Cerberus, which dabbled in immoral experiments. In Mass Effect 2, as we know, this organization becomes the main ally of Shepard and his team. The novel “Ascension” was clearly written to present the activities of Cerberus from a different angle, as well as to introduce us to the Specter for the first time - this is how domestic translators dubbed the mysterious head of Cerberus, originally called Elusive Man.

Karpyshyn copes with expanding the boundaries of the Mass Effect universe. In Ascension, fans are introduced to Omega Station, the Collectors and the Quorian Migrant Fleet - here we mean, of course, English-speaking readers: in Russia the book was published after the release of Mass Effect 2, although not with such a monstrous delay as the first novel, "Mass Effect: Discovery". If you remember, from it we learned that the Alliance did not disdain developments that were very controversial from a moral point of view. These include the “Ascension” project, which gives the name to the second book - within its framework, talented children are turned into biotics through operations and training.

The plot of the novel revolves around a girl named Gillian, who suffers from autism and has powerful biotic potential - and, naturally, is in the sphere of interests of Cerberus. The girl ends up in “Ascension” because of the Specter - for the time being, he only monitors Gillian’s successes within the project, but then decides to lay his hands on the young talent.

However, the girl's adoptive father, Paul Grayson, who raised her before she became a member of the Ascension, does not want Gillian to be a guinea pig. The piquancy of the situation is that Grayson is also a Cerberus agent. Paul raised the girl on behalf of the Specter himself - and is now torn between his loyalty to the organization and his love for Gillian. However, she also has other defenders: Kali Sanders, whom we knew from the previous book, became an employee of Ascension and, when a threat loomed over one of her charges, she did not hesitate to give up everything to save Gillian. Needless to say, the Specter’s people immediately rush in pursuit of the fugitives?

Perhaps the story itself told in “Ascension” is not so bad, but the novel is truly puzzling. Is it really possible that in the two years that passed between the geth attack on the Citadel and the resurrection of Captain Shepard, nothing more interesting happened in the Mass Effect universe than Cerberus' hunt for a biotic prodigy?

“Ascension” also inherited the main drawback of the first book. In Karpishin's novels it is difficult to find psychologically authentic characters - their place is taken by archetypes endowed with only a couple of characteristic traits. But this is clearly not enough to make the heroes come to life. Even the main characters of the novel are perceived as some kind of NPCs - and evoke no more compassion.

Contrary to our expectations, the second novel in the Mass Effect series turned out to be weaker than the first. The wonderful screenwriter Karpishin remains a very mediocre writer, and to the artistic shortcomings that we noted in the review of the first part of the series, “The Ascension” also added a not very interesting plot.

This, however, does not prevent Karpishin from working hard on the third book, Mass Effect: Retribution, which is scheduled for release in the United States at the end of July. Contrary to tradition, it will not be a prequel to Mass Effect 3, but will be a direct continuation of “The Ascension”: for example, the Specter, having obtained Reaper technology somewhere, decides to test it on the traitor Grayson. We can no longer expect a masterpiece from Karpyshyn; we can only hope that Retribution will reveal new secrets of the Mass Effect universe - after all, this is why we read video game novelizations.

The game Mass Effect amazed the audience with the deepest elaboration of the world. The creators from BioWare have prepared fantastic amounts of additional information, which not every literary series can boast of. It would seem that on such fertile soil a bountiful harvest of creative heritage should grow... but no. Mass Effect has only three books in its literary portfolio. But what books! Their author is Drew Karpyshyn himself, the main screenwriter of the game series. Who else, if not him, should know what happened and what will happen. The first two books have been translated into Russian - these are prequels to the first and second games in the series.

What can they give to fans and how interesting are they for an outside reader?

After the events of “Discovery,” the Council’s trust in people has significantly decreased, which will come back to haunt Shepard more than once.

Humanity loves to cause trouble for itself. The development of artificial intelligence is prohibited, but the Earth Alliance still conducts research in this area. And when one of the secret laboratories is attacked, one of the best officers, David Anderson, the future captain of the Normandy, is sent to investigate the case. At the same time, Specter Saren is investigating the incident. Both of them are looking for a girl, Cali Sanders, who disappeared from the station on the eve of the attack. Anderson and Saren race to unravel the tangle of intrigue, not yet suspecting that this whole story with the attack on the base is just children's toys compared to what lies behind it.

It's hard to find fault with the book. From the author of the brilliant, although not original, plot of the game, we received a literary work of the same class - yes, tailored according to all the patterns of the genre, but without losing its fascination. The plot twists are expected, but still breathtaking, the characters are typical, but evoke empathy. Paradoxical but true. And for fans of the game, the book is doubly valuable - “Discovery” tells the story of the origins of Saren’s betrayal and his enmity with Anderson.

Sitting in his small one-man ship, Saren had been browsing through files from the flash drive in Chian's metal case for several hours. His guesses were confirmed: the mysterious artifact turned out to be a certain ship called “Lord”. It was a magnificent creation from the time of the disappearance of the Protheans - a gigantic warship...

Personal opinion: An excellent action movie with elements of a detective story, which reveals many aspects of the game universe in more detail during the course of the action - dynamically and without huge glossaries.

Judging by the size, the Citadel's docks are designed for ships much larger than the Normandy.

Gillian, a girl with incredible biotic talent, is being trained at an academy for especially gifted biotic children under the supervision of Kali Sanders. No one knows that Gillian is placed in the academy as part of a complex plan of the mysterious Phantom and the “father” who visits her is an agent of a cunning shadow businessman, raising the child from infancy as part of the same plan. According to the laws of fiction, the secret becomes clear, and a whirlpool of events soon swirls around the girl, into which not only her loved ones will be drawn, but also the entire race of Quorians.

The author's second novel is maintained at the same level as the first, except that the action has become somewhat more drawn out. But only from this book can you glean invaluable information about the life and habits of quarians. After reading Ascension, you begin to feel sympathy for these outcasts, despised in the galaxy, who, despite everything, maintain optimism and human values.

The Traveling Fleet was also the largest concentration of ships in the known galaxy, containing tens of thousands of vessels, from tiny shuttles to cruisers, and, to top it all off, three gigantic motherships - a true marvel of space technology...

Personal opinion: The novel teases the appetite well before the second part of the game, and also provides unique information about the quarians.
