Tests in English disjunctive questions. Exercises

Greetings my good ones.

I don’t know about you personally, but for all my students, one of my favorites is the topic of tail questions. Not difficult to understand and quick to learn - she won the hearts of all English learners with lightning speed. Therefore, today the topic of our conversation is Question Tags: grammar.
You will find a few rules, a little more examples and a lot of exercises!

What are tail questions for?

If you translate the "tail" questions into Russian, then they will all mean "Isn't it?" or “Really?”
In most schools, this topic is taught in the 7th grade. But even a student who has moved to the 5th grade can master this topic, because by this time he already had to explain basic sentence structure and at least the present simple tense.

The rules and reasons for using these questions in English are very simple:

  1. When in a conversation we need to clarify information or confirm our thoughts.
  2. If we want the interlocutor to comment on our words.
  3. Sometimes we just need to get the consent of the interlocutor with our thoughts.

How are tail questions formed?

Everything here is as simple as two and two! Here is a step by step guide and examples:

  • Finding an auxiliary verb (is, are, am, ) in a declarative sentence.
    She is a doctor.
  • If it's positive (is, are, am, was, were, have, has, had, do, does, did, will) - we make it negative.
He is a good student, isn't he?
  • If it's negative (isn "t, aren't, wasn't, weren't, haven't, hasn't, hadn't, don't, doesn't, didn't, won't) - make it positive .
He is not a good student, is he?
  • If the auxiliary verb “escaped” from our sentence (as it happens in the present and past tenses), then we put in the tail the auxiliary verb of the tense in which the sentence is written.
She speaks English very well, doesn't she? He worked last week, didn't he?
  • If we have modal verbs in the sentence (can, must, etc.) - use them in the ponytail.
He can drive a car, can't he?

So that you do not think that everything is so simple - here you are several specific cases , which most often make mistakes:

  1. I am tall, aren't I? We can't write amn't!
  2. She had to leave the house, didn't she? — Here "had" is not an auxiliary verb!

Several underwater rocks

  • To answer a tail question, you need to refer to the question itself, and not to the tail. If the proposal is affirmative, then say yes if you agree, and say no if you disagree. If the sentence denies something, then agreement is expressed with the word no, and disagreement with the word yes.
  • In tail questions, a lot depends on intonation. If you lower your voice, then the interlocutor will consider that you do not need an answer. But if you raise your intonation on the tail - wait for a detailed answer to the question.
  • Sometimes Americans are lazy creatures in terms of language - instead of a ponytail they just use the word right.
  • Sometimes ponytails are used in sentences-orders or sentences-requests. So, in such cases, the verbs can\will or won't are usually used. The first is usually used for orders, while the second is for requests.
It's stuffy. Open the window, won't you? Stuffy, won't you open the window?
Don't forget to do it, will you? Don't forget to do it, okay?

So, are you ready for a little practice? Then here are the exercises with the answers at the end of the lesson.

There is the easiest way to determine how well one or another grammatical material is learned - you just need to translate (orally or in writing) into English the sentences in this grammatical field. Then mistakes will immediately begin to appear, by which you can orient yourself and repeat what is not firmly learned.

I will write questions to be carefully read and translated into English. But not all questions are divisive; some of them are general. Therefore, you must first determine the type of question, and then proceed to the translation. The grammar is simple, so all attention is on the translation of questions. At the end of the list of questions, I will write the correct translations and you can check yourself.
