University Pathway Program ILSC Canada University Pathway Program. What are the Pathway and Foundation preparatory programs for?

Often, when thinking about getting an education in other countries, we are faced with the need to understand in detail the peculiarities of the education system and admission to the desired higher educational institutions or schools. In view of the large number of differences in the educational systems of different countries, and, at times, the lack of information, some have serious difficulties. In this article, we will help you understand the different types of higher education institutions in the United States, as well as tell you how you can be guaranteed to enroll in one of them.

Types of universities in the USA

  • College. A higher education institution that focuses primarily on teaching students, rather than on scientific work, which, if present, remains in second place. A distinctive feature of colleges is the sharpness of training in teaching professional skills and knowledge necessary for subsequent work in the specialty, which often gives more chances for employment, since employers need professionals graduating from colleges. The vast majority of colleges are small (up to 2,000 students) and take four years to study.
  • University. The number of students in this institution of higher education is much higher than college and can be over 20 thousand, so the percentage of the ratio of teachers and students in universities is much lower. The main emphasis here is not on acquiring practical knowledge and skills, but on pursuing scientific activities. Often, there are higher admission requirements for foreign students than for local applicants. Universities can be either private or public or state universities.

Documents required for admission

  1. A copy of the student's passport or other identity documents
  2. Certificate or diploma of existing education
  3. Language Proficiency Exam Certificate
  4. Letters of recommendation from school or university teachers
  5. Motivational essay

What is Pathway?

One of the ways to simplify the process of admission to an American college or university are the so-called Pathway programs, the essence of which is a smooth transition to the desired higher educational institution. Having chosen an American university in which you would like to study, you are enrolled in the program, and you go to take a special preparatory course at the university or college in which you will later study. If you have not yet decided on a specific university, but decided by all means to get an education in the USA, then there is an opportunity to go to the USA, and already during the program, having found out all the features of universities on the spot, take a course and enter the chosen higher educational institution.

Pathway programs include classes in the following areas:

  • learning English so that your level of proficiency in a foreign language is sufficient to complete your studies;
  • development of educational skills required for successful adaptation to the new educational system and the requirements for students while studying at universities;
  • studying the basics of academic subjects that you will study in detail in the future;

At the end of the program, participants take a special internal exam, which in most cases is much simpler than the standard entrance exams, on the basis of which they enter the desired college or university.

The main advantages of Pathway programs

  • Access to higher education in the United States, one of the highest quality in the world and recognized in the world market;
  • No age restrictions. Anyone can become a participant, both a high school graduate and a person who has long graduated from a university in Russia;
  • Optional presence of a certificate of knowledge of the language. You either take an internal examination upon admission to a university after the Pathway program, or, if you wish, take an English proficiency exam at the end of this program, having undergone serious training in a language environment under the guidance of experienced native speakers;
  • A wide choice between universities and specialties;
  • Smooth entry both into the education system in another country and into the culture of this country;
  • The opportunity to thoroughly prepare for studying in the United States, significantly increasing the level of English proficiency, having familiarized yourself with the basics;

Thus, Pathway programs provide a real opportunity for international students to enroll in prestigious American universities and colleges, simplifying the procedure for taking a certificate of English proficiency, increasing the level of English proficiency and helping a new student quickly adapt to the peculiarities of student life in the United States. Any participant of the "Scholarships in the USA" program developed and implemented by the Center for Career and Education Abroad has such an opportunity to enter an American university, within which, in addition to guaranteed admission, you get an excellent opportunity to minimize your training costs.

Every year, thousands of foreigners come to the United States who want to receive the coveted diploma of an American university. Moreover, many of them do not enter local universities directly, but through the Pathway preparatory program. This program allows a student from abroad who does not know English well enough and does not have a direct GPA for admission directly, without exams, to enter an American university.

Pathways are conducted both by the universities themselves and by educational centers in partnership with universities. In the second case, the student can choose the future alma mater directly in the course of his studies.

There are 2 main types of Pathway in the United States:

  • Undergraduate pathway- a program of language and academic training for those wishing to enroll in a bachelor's degree.
  • Graduate Pathway- a program of language and academic training, designed for applicants to the magistracy.

In both cases, students study English as well as academic disciplines. The main difference lies in the level of training: the requirements for applicants for a master's degree are higher than those for applicants for a bachelor's degree, therefore, the level of training for future masters will be higher.

The Pathway program lasts from several months to 1 year. The higher your initial level of knowledge, the shorter the preparatory course you can choose.

As part of the program, students study:

  • English with an emphasis on the development of general language (speaking, reading, listening, writing) and academic (writing scientific papers in English, preparing presentations in English, etc.) skills.
  • Academic disciplines in their specialty included in the first year undergraduate program.

Credits earned while studying on Pathway are credited by the university in the future. That is why a Pathway graduate can be admitted to the middle of the first or immediately to the second year of the undergraduate program.

Requirements for applicants

To enroll in the program Undergraduate pathway in the USA, you must submit:

  • certificate of secondary education,
  • grade point average in school grades (GPA),
  • language test results.

Passing scores for tests and GPA are significantly lower than for admission to a bachelor's degree (IELTS from 5.5, TOEFL from 60 iBT, GPA about 3). Students over 16 years old are admitted to the program.

For admission to the program GraduatePathway required:

  • higher education diploma (bachelor's degree),
  • language test result.

Sometimes universities make additional requirements - for example, they may need letters of recommendation from teachers from the previous place of study. For admission to the Graduate Pathway, passing scores are higher than for admission to the Undergraduate Pathway, but lower than those for admission directly to the master's program. Typically, for admission to the Graduate Pathway, a grade point average of 2.6 to 3.0, IELTS from 6.0, or TOEFL from 75 are required.

Cost of education

The cost of the Pathway program in America depends on the status of the university or educational center at which the training takes place, as well as on the duration of the program. Typically, the cost of a year (3 semesters) of Pathway studies in the United States is comparable to the cost of a year of undergraduate studies - from $ 15,000.

Who needs the Pathway program?

You should consider the Pathway program if:

  • You have a Russian high school diploma (or a diploma from a Russian university) and dream of studying at an American university.
  • Your level of language or academic background does not allow you to go directly to the institution you want to go to.
  • You need some time to adapt to your new educational environment.
  • You are not completely sure which university you want to study at (Pathway programs at educational centers allow you to prepare for admission to several universities at once).

The Pathway program in the USA is the most effective way for a Russian student to enter an American university. If you choose Pathway, you don't have to overpay for a full year of study like other preparatory courses just to make up for the difference in educational programs. In addition, even those who do not know English well or have a low school grade point average can enroll in Pathway. Pathway makes the path to American higher education simple and accessible.

The Pathway program or university preparation is gaining more and more popularity among international students every year. According to Study Portals and Cambridge English, 1,192 English-language Pathway programs were launched between January 2015 and September 2015. Today there are many programs of different specifics, but, as a rule, they all have two main characteristics:

The programs are aimed at preparing international students for admission to the English-speaking baccalaureate and for those who need language and academic preparation for further studies.

Programs combine academic content, English language learning, study skills, and cultural adaptation.

Pathway programs are not accredited for admission to a foreign university, but provide the necessary preparation for admission, which positively affects progress and academic performance during further studies. There are several types of programs: some educational institutions offer preparation for admission to a particular faculty or direction. Other educational institutions provide a choice of universities with which they cooperate. Thus, at the end of the Pathway program, students will be able to choose where to go next. The same applies to the choice of a specialty: some training programs are more extensive, without requiring a preliminary selection of a specific subject for further study.

From a university perspective, Pathway preparation programs have their own advantages. Successful completion of this training indicates the presence and development of the necessary academic and language skills. That is, accepting students who have completed the Pathway course, or, as they are sometimes called, the Foundation, the university does not receive a "blind choice", but proof that the student has the necessary level of language proficiency and basic academic training. Hans De Wit, director of the Center for International Higher Education at Boston College, noted the existence of Pathway programs as a way to avoid enrolling students who are not inclined to serious study and lack the necessary skills.

On the part of foreign students, the Pathway and Foundation programs allow you to achieve the required level of proficiency in the language in which students will study if they do not speak it at the time of the start of training. Most of these programs accept students with a minimum level of English - 5.2 according to the IELTS system, instead of the required 6.0-7.0 for undergraduate degrees.

Where Pathway Programs Are Relevant

Most Pathway programs are in English. Consequently, the most popular countries for such programs are native English countries. The UK, which ranks first among the countries with high quality education, according to statistics from Study Portals and Cambridge English offers the widest choice of programs. Behind it, significantly fewer programs are offered by training centers in oceanic regions, such as Australia, New Zealand and other small and large islands. They are followed by North America and Europe. Similar programs can be found in Asia, Africa and South America.

Further research indicates potential in the development of Foundation and Pathway programs, particularly in the United States and Europe. This alignment shows the US interest in the internalization of American universities. In terms of European programs, the focus will be on countries such as the Netherlands, Germany and the Nordic countries. However, the UK will not give up its popularity. Today, about 40% of UK overseas students are pre-completing the Pathway program and this figure will continue to grow at a similar pace.

The situation with the development of the popularity of Pathway programs indicates a positive disposition of foreign universities towards foreign students. Such programs significantly improve the performance of students, which is a huge advantage for both students themselves and for universities.

The Pathway program from the Eurocentres language school is your chance to enter prestigious colleges and universities in Canada and America to get a decent degree.

The Pathway program from the Eurocentres language school is a kind of "springboard" for admission to the best universities in Canada and America. Its task is to prepare students for an academic career, taking into account the specifics of the country, developing the necessary skills for successful study and adapting the student in an unfamiliar environment. Eurocentres' partners in this program are 24 prestigious educational institutions in Canada and the United States, which do not require an IELTS or TOEFL certificate in case of successful completion.

The main advantage is that upon registration you receive a letter of enrollment in the desired educational institution. Already on the spot, you can take a closer look at the country in which you are going to live, get the necessary ones for subsequent employment, as well as deal with the necessary academic standards for subsequent successful study at a foreign university.

Programs

About the program

  • Age: from 16 years old
  • Required language level: Elementary and higher
  • Intensity: Intensive (25 lessons / week), Super-intensive (30 lessons / week)
  • Duration of the lesson: 50 minutes
  • Duration of the course: 12-48 weeks
  • Location: Toronto, Vancouver, San Diego.

Eurocentres focuses on the individual abilities of each student and thus selects the appropriate course for his specialty. During the training, the student acquires all the necessary skills for further study at the university: the ability to understand and briefly outline the essence of the lecture, understanding of the numerous rules for paperwork that differ from the academic standards of the CIS, the development of the academic language with its clichés, etc. The language level is improved through daily practice provided by the Pathway program. All aspects are being worked out: reading, writing, speaking English, vocabulary is increasing. Daily communication will greatly simplify the search for an employer, especially since universities and colleges often organize special exhibitions and conferences dedicated to employment within their walls.

The program is divided into three stages:

  1. Pre-Pathway: Intensive English teaching in all aspects: grammar, reading, writing and speaking. Suitable for beginners who only know the basics, which will help to consolidate here.
  2. Pathway I: Repetition of the material, increasing the level of language proficiency from Intermediate to Advanced, introduction to the course of studying the necessary skills for a university or college.
  3. Pathway ii: Purposeful study of academic language standards; seminars devoted to the correct maintenance of notes and memorization of material, teaching research skills and the effective use of sources for writing academic papers, as well as practical presentation skills.

Electives

Specialized electives

Unlike conventional language learning programs, the Pathway program already includes electives necessary for a future student, which are held in the daytime:

Speaking practice: class discussions and overcoming the "language barrier"

Academic writing and speaking: teaching the correct writing of essays both for educational purposes at a university or college, and for assignments in the international tests IELTS, TOEFL and the Cambridge ESOL line. Teachers also talk about presentation techniques, help develop public speaking skills

Academic writing and reading: studying the theory of writing academic papers, as well as the practice of writing them. This skill is necessary for obtaining a degree in English-speaking universities and in many cases is key in evaluating student work.

Elective preparation for international exams IELTS, TOEFL, the Cambridge ESOL line with practice on real test cases

Business English elective: business communication in theory and practice plus preparation for the TOEIC exam. This includes the study of the correct grammar and vocabulary used in business speech, initiation into the nuances of negotiations and business correspondence.

Bonus

Pathway Program Coordinator

Another advantageous position of this program is the personal coordinator from the Eurocentres school. His responsibilities include one-on-one advice on choosing a college or university in Canada or America. He also provides the necessary support in the process of entering the desired university, holds regular meetings, noting the level of your progress in English. The mission of the coordinator is to answer in as much detail as possible various questions about studying and living abroad, to be a kind of guide in the English-speaking world with an unusual culture. The coordinator also acts as a liaison between the student and Eurocentres partner institutions, ensuring that you are ready for an academic career.
