What should a digger do in winter? Tips for the "winter cop" Search from MD on frozen ground.

Spring and autumn are the main times when a treasure hunter can walk around with a metal detector. Already at the end of May, the grass rises so much that it is almost impossible to search, although there are some grass search methods,. The search in autumn is interesting because there are not so many people in the forests, and the bloodsuckers are no longer so active, and in late autumn, they are not at all, but the grass in some areas does not allow searching.

But, in the fall, you can go to the mowed fields, from which the harvest has already been harvested, so that in the fall the treasure hunter is given the opportunity to “work up” emotions before the long winter. In some regions of the country, people are given the opportunity to dig in the winter, but for most fans to wander with a metal detector, winter is a time of silence, which towards the end of December-January turns into an unbearable itch for the "cop".

And in February, search engines are already making predictions about spring, looking through their finds, photos and videos for the hundredth time. But everything is not so bad and sad: it is in winter that the treasure hunter is given a unique opportunity to thoroughly prepare for the search season, work on mistakes and draw some conclusions for himself, so that the land thawed in spring will give new interesting finds.

Winter preparation

So, what can a treasure hunter do in winter so that this time is not in vain? I'll try to give you some advice. First of all, winter is a time when you can take your time sorting through your finds, cleaning and decorating them.

It often happens that during the search season a person searches, folds his finds, cleans them a little, but he does the main work on giving a “commodity” look to lost items in winter. The process of cleaning and decorating is not as fast as it might seem. Soaking in soap, adjusting frames, fixing, preserving and so on - all this takes time. Winter provides such an opportunity, which is desirable to use!

Working with cards

Working with maps is one of the main and important stages in treasure hunting. You can be the owner of the simplest device, but with the right place, the finds are guaranteed, and vice versa. Comparing old and new maps is an important milestone, and only the most attentive searchers will be rewarded in the spring. On old maps, you need to pay attention to everything, to any signs that are indicated there. There is no need to rush, because winter provides time ...

Literature analysis

Literature analysis is an equally important process, it can be compared with the work on maps. Literature can open your eyes to some events, provide more complete information about the village you are interested in, tell about the stories and myths of the region, give direction (push) for your search.

Read and analyze books in your native land - the key to good finds

Equipment repair and upgrade

Repair and upgrade of equipment - everything is clear without words. During the search season, some components of the device can simply break down (search coils, armrests, rods, headphones, and so on). Sometimes, a person wants to change the device, and just in winter he is given the opportunity to most quickly and profitably sell his metal detector and purchase a new device (new here means - another). In winter, you can buy something from additional equipment: clothes, shovels, knives, backpacks. Moreover, do it deliberately, visiting more than one store (including on the Internet), reading reviews.

Meeting with comrades

During the season, there is not much time for such meetings. It is not always possible to visit the rally, besides, for many, in parallel with the search, the summer season opens ... in general, a lot of worries. In winter, organizing such meetings is much easier.

Visit to the polyclinic

And finally, in winter you can vaccinate against tick-borne encephalitis (for some it will be the first vaccination, someone will make the second or third vaccine, and so on) all you need is to visit a clinic or a private vaccination center, but for some reason many of the search engines and those who like to wander in the forest do not do this, which they later regret. Do not shelve this question, because it is treasure hunters who are at high risk, as in the spring they pass kilometer distances on the forest floor and on the grass.

As you can see, winter, it turns out, is not so boring, there is something for a treasure hunter to do (provided that the search is generally impossible). If you correctly prioritize and organize your time, the winter months will fly by unnoticed, and one day you will hear the pleasant sound of a drop outside the window ... soon in the fields, soon the new season, and will unlock new artifacts and relics. Earth Grandfather will help!

Greetings fellow coopers! So winter wrapped its veil in the vast expanses of our country, along which we just recently walked with our instruments and found old and not very coins. Well, now the snow, because of which it is simply impossible to search, and the frost, which is dangerous for the electronic filling of the device. You can’t go out on a cop, but so hunting! I completely agree! What can you do with cold winter days and evenings in anticipation of the new season? - We'll talk about this now.

keep looking

If it’s not at all at all, it’s drawn to searches and adventures, there is time and transport, you can continue to search in the winter, when it gets warmer outside. Attic search, search in abandoned houses, underground has not yet been canceled. Well, for especially the "frostbitten" 😛 . Thus, even in winter, in the off-season, you can very successfully search for coins and treasures.

Work with and historical literature

Finding and developing new places to cop, which are the least visited by cops, is also quite an interesting activity. Especially when you study the history of places and maps of your native land. Having search places in your supply, you will not waste precious time in the high season and in a hurry to look for a place where to go to dig. And in winter, slowly, when nothing distracts, it becomes possible to thoroughly consider all the available options, choose the most promising ones and immediately fill in points in the navigator. Also during the winter there is time to establish the location of those objects of which there is not even a trace left. Well, in the summer it remains only to explore! Carefully break maps, books and articles, you will be rewarded with a large number of credit finds.

Clean finds

If you have been digging, digging and digging in the summer, autumn, spring, adding up all the finds and postponing their cleaning for the winter, then know that the time has come! Attribution, sorting, cleaning and optional evaluation and sale of finds. There is plenty of time for all this. Moreover, cleaning by some methods is carried out very slowly. Yes, and from the finds, crafts are different to make, for example, various kinds of panels.

Do other interesting things

In addition to digging, there are many other outdoor activities and hobbies. For example ice fishing and hunting. Both there and there also have their own excitement in the pursuit of luck, only the process is slightly different and the tools are not the same 🙂. And there is also time for other hobbies, household chores, and, of course, for the family.

Upgrade, buy or upgrade equipment

Winter is a great time to change your device, buy a coil or a pinpointer. Moreover, usually in winter the prices for this are all lower than in the high season. It's worth taking advantage of! Moreover, you will not look sadly at the fields when the old device is sold and the new one has not yet been bought.

broken

It is no secret that some parts and assemblies of modern metal detectors can break. By themselves or due to the negligence of the search engine. Coil ears, armrests, rods and even electronic components. Without wasting digging time, all this can be done in winter.

So we looked at some of the options for what you can do with your free time when digging is impossible or difficult due to harsh climatic conditions. There are also many other options than to occupy yourself in your free time, for every taste and budget. The choice is yours!

There are regions where the field treasure hunting season is not interrupted even in winter. Cold is rare here, and even if there are occasional sub-zero temperatures, it is usually not enough to freeze the ground. Siberia is another matter. It happens that at the end of October you have to turn off the instruments - after the night minus ten or twelve, the soil turns to stone. However, even in such conditions, some treasure hunters successfully continue the season and bring it to year-round. One of these all-weather -. He has already conducted several winter field campaigns and has gained enough experience to formulate some winter search rules.

Stimulus

The winter that followed the first field season showed that Kolya Zykin began to “break down” specifically. With each winter day it became more obvious: he would not endure until spring. I had to dress warmly and go to the field. First with an ordinary shovel, then all with new and new devices. It turned out that in winter you can spend time with no less benefit than in summer. Area

First you need to find a suitable site where it is realistic to conduct a winter search. The depth of the snow cover should be low - no more than five to six centimeters. In the conditions of the Irkutsk region, these are the places of former uluses in the steppe regions along the Kachug tract. The snow is largely blown by the winds, and you can find areas that are quite suitable for searching.

Even more attractive sites in the area of the Small Sea. There is no snow here at all. Another question is that the finds here are not very good. Basically, these are copper coins from the era of Nicholas II.

Technics

Those who cut into the ground in winter know how one careless movement can threaten a future find. Moreover, it is difficult for a person who is unprepared at all to hit one place with an ax, since the tool also strives to jump off the edge of the cone-shaped hole and crack in the very middle where the target is located. In this way, in the presence of the author of these lines, the unique seal of the village headman of the 1780s was practically cut.

Kolya Zykin also at first allowed such incidents: the copper Russian penny and the Siberian “ten” went to the fullest. Then the search engine realized that it was necessary to change the technique of work. Now he does this: first, the center of the target is determined as accurately as possible. The ax itself (more precisely, not quite an ax, but some kind of ax-shaped device - more on that below) is installed motionlessly on the edge of the future hole at a right angle. They hit the ax with a sledgehammer. A kind of square is cut out. In theory, after the square is completed, the middle should separate itself into a kind of cubic block. If it doesn’t separate, it needs to be helped with a few additional blows in its own tracks. If you are sure that the target is in the middle and not on the edge, you can slightly change the angle of impact towards the center of the fossa.

If the target remains in the soil, repeat the procedure.

Target

Kolya Zykin advises to dig (more precisely, to hollow) only those goals in which he is completely sure. If the treasure hunter has enough experience with instrumental searches, he will be able to distinguish a coin from a rusty stove damper lying at a depth of a meter, even if his instrument (the same Explorer) shows quite acceptable numbers.

The deepest target that Kolya extracted was a bell from a depth of 30 centimeters. This whole layer of earth, the treasure hunter recalls, was of the same hardness - like a stone. Kolya never got to the looser layers that do not freeze in winter.

metal detectors

Kolya Zykin refrains from giving advice on which metal detector to work in winter. He worked as an Explorer metal detector, his friend - Sovereign, but there were no significant differences in work in summer and winter conditions. Explorer’s display froze and the numbers almost completely disappeared, and when they appeared, they slowed down, that is, they showed the values some time after the beep. Kolya warmed up the display with his hands, however, some winter search engines do not pay attention to the metal detector display at all, but work solely on sound.

It is better to use a coil for a metal detector with a minimum diameter - it better determines the position of the target, cuts it off from debris and does not give distortion if there is some other metal object near the target. Immediately, for a number of reasons (increased search depth, difficult determination of the center of the target), it is extremely irrational to use coils larger than ten inches in winter search.

Axe

With the technique that Kolya Zykin preaches (see above), an ordinary ax turns out to be almost useless. Very soon, the ax starts to "walk", and then falls out altogether. You have to constantly put an ax on an ax handle, drive in all sorts of wedges, which, firstly, distracts from the search, and secondly, it turns out to be a very short-lived measure.

By trial and error, Kolya Zykin came up with the following device: the ax is separated from the ax handle in advance, and it no longer participates in the process. A metal handle made of thick reinforcement is welded to the ax on the side (exactly on the side, and not in place of the ax handle!). In the process of work, the searcher holds the unit by the handle, and hits the butt with a sledgehammer. The handle is wrapped with a bandage so that the hand does not freeze.

However, this winter ax is not too durable. One day is usually not enough. The ax falls off the handle. With intensive work, two axes are missing. Therefore, Kolya Zykin advises all followers of his method to take at least two such devices for searches, and preferably all three.

Hands get tired of carrying such an ax, plus the metal armature is still cold, despite the wound bandage. Therefore, Kolya makes a through hole in the metal handle, threads the rope through it and wears the device by the rope loop.

Kolya did not try all-metal factory axes of the Friskars type, since in summer conditions he repeatedly witnessed their unreliability. These are parquet axes, unsuitable for a harsh winter search, the treasure hunter is sure.Lotions

Of the additional devices needed for the winter search, Kolya drew attention to the gas burner. It is necessary to warm the lump of earth, which may contain a coin or some other purpose.

It often happens that in the process of cutting out a coin is all in sight: only one side is frozen to the bottom of the hole or to the extracted lump, and the other side is completely open. Then it is enough to press the coin with your finger and hold your finger for a few seconds. The coin will heat up and fall off by itself.

It is much more difficult when the coin remains completely in a clod of earth and only its edge is visible. Trying to use a knife or, even more so, an ax here is fraught with danger: you can damage the coin. Then a gas burner comes in handy. A minute is enough to warm up a piece of earth the size of a large chicken egg.

A spray can, advises Kolya Zykin, should be worn as close to the body as possible so that it does not freeze. Advantages of winter search

During the winter search, it is often possible to find very decent targets on previously knocked out sites. Winter search, as a rule, is slower and more concentrated; the treasure hunter values each goal and works with it as delicately as possible. Grass, which in the summer could create considerable interference with the search, falls off, or it is burned in late autumn.

So, last winter, the author of these lines, on one super-knocked out site, where at least thirty or forty treasure hunters used to go before, managed, together with colleagues in the workshop, to find a whole line of "Siberia": 10 kopecks, two coins of two kopecks, about a dozen kopecks, money and half-shelves, as well as a piglet of the ring of 1809, a Masonic nickel and a bunch of different differences.

Not knowing at that time the experience of Kolya Zykin, the author of these lines and his colleagues worked with ordinary axes and finished them all in a couple of hours.

Is it possible in winter, when the ground is covered with snow, to continue to engage in your favorite hobby - searching for metal objects using a ground metal detector? An experienced digger, without hesitation, will answer: “of course you can” and close this post of mine. But the beginner will still have questions, among which the main one will be: “if there is snow on the ground, the air temperature is minus, then how is search possible under such conditions?”. The question is interesting and in order to answer it, I waited for the snowfall and went into the forest with a metal detector.

Snow is water.

Before I set off to stomp the snow cover with a metal detector, I waterproofed the user interface, so to speak.

block waterproofing

I took a stretch film and wrapped it around the electronics unit. Instead of a film, one could also take a “T-shirt bag”, but the film was the first to fall under my arm.

Even if there is a drip-proof cover on the block, it still needs to be isolated - it does not save from snow, especially from wet.

True, there is one minus of such waterproofing: practically nothing is visible on the display - you have to perceive everything by ear. But, since I didn’t go looking for old things, the display readings on the metal detector are very important to me. Why? More on this in the next section.

You also need to remember about your pinpointer. If this device is not designed to work under water, then it is best to leave it at home. My pin has factory waterproof protection, so I always take it with me with confidence.

this pin is not afraid of excessive moisture

Metal detector for winter detecting.

Everyone has heard about such a physical phenomenon as condensate? I'm sure that's all. Therefore, in order for the device to work after turning it on, it must be held for some time at the temperature at which it will work. Actually, these are the basics and I won’t dwell on them too much. The only thing I want to say is: each metal detector reacts differently to frost. Surprised? The first time I heard this, I was surprised too. For example: my Berkut 5 may lose stability during searches in the cold - a simple reboot restores its operation; Minelab X-Terra's buttons become brittle; etc.

It is also worth considering that due to snow, the distance from the coil to the ground increases, and thus the detection depth is lost. Therefore, it would not be rational to go for a winter search with a small coil.

Since this time I decided to go to a garbage place, I had to take a metal detector with me, which would cope well with garbage targets and had a large coil with increased selectivity. As you already understood, this is AKA Berkut 5 s at 10 kHz. I know this detector well, and the 8.5x12.5 inch coil will give me depth of detection, good capture and separation of nearby targets.

The secret of the winter cop.

A small secret of searching with a metal detector in winter is that snow, frost, dirt are nothing, main so that the shovel can be driven into the ground.

The ground in the forest does not freeze for a long time - after all, the fallen leaves (or the process of its decay) do not let frost. And the soil does not freeze at all when there is no moisture in it - even at minus 10, and this earth will be crumbly - dug.

What a cop he is in winter.

While it was snowing, we had to dig everything by ear. This is not why I bought Berkut. But when the precipitation stopped, and removed the film from the block, then I began to dig more on the case.

I didn't expect to find anything of value - I just wanted to dig for coins. And there are always enough of them in places of rest. In order not to paint every one of your finds, it’s better to look at them in the gallery.

Digging a penny, I did not feel cold - the excitement and contemplation of coin circles warmed me the best.

My drive ended when the detector reported a low battery and passed out. It’s even good - I didn’t overwork, which often happens in such cases.

My result for 2 hours of snow digging looked like this:

Tupnyak in the trash.

This section barely touches on the winter cop, but I added it because I wanted to talk about my next trip to the winter garbage forest.

So far, I have not come across a metal detector better than Berkut, which could report information about the find on the display with great accuracy. Therefore, I take this AKA detector to Soviet trash cans. But, this time I wanted to experiment and went into the forest with an ACE 300i and .

A device with VDI, which would help me in identifying the target, and the coil in selectivity, depth and capture area. Thunder is larger than Hunter, but this does not prevent her from maneuvering among branches just as well.

So what was my stupidity in this exit? And the joke is that I have no idea which coin corresponds to which number of vdi. So I had to dig everything in order to at least roughly understand which value on the screen corresponds to which find. But I didn’t climb places of rest with ACE 300i, only in the old days, where everything is mastered much faster.

A couple of coins, a bullet, a button, that's the whole result, since I went into a forest that was completely unknown to me and with a device that I had not fully studied.

Traditionally, winter for a search engine is a time for restoring finds and reading thematic literature, working on maps and in archives, making plans for the new season and reading forums. But for many of us, the "winter breaks" in detecting are so strong that you want to pick up a metal detector, a crowbar, put on felt boots and go to hammer the frozen ground. By the way, some can’t stand it and do just that, “for fun” or because there is nothing to do! And in this article I want to talk about the real possibilities for winter searches with a metal detector. They are!

Of course, lucky are those whose temperature outside the window does not drop below +5 C in winter, but what about those who do not live by the sea and not in the southern regions in winter?! It turns out that you can keep yourself occupied even on winter days, and having shown ingenuity and ingenuity, start searching when it is snowing outside and winter is in full swing!

If you have a lot of free time, work and salary allow - you can, of course, do it simply: buy tickets to warmer climes and go - even on vacation, at least for the weekend to the southern lands of our old town or to another country where eternal summer and the law are friendly to our hobby (search with a metal detector).

But now I will share with you real and not distant places where you can walk in winter with a metal detector and always find something!

Sledges for sledding and ski slopes
This type of search is perhaps closer to the "beach people" because. You can find mostly modern items (lost things) there. But, in winter, for many, this will pass for happiness, and no one has canceled the joy of finding expensive and valuable items.
When riding on winter slides, people fall, do it often and actively in the physical plane. Not surprisingly, they lose a lot of valuable things in the process.

I tried this type of search with a metal detector in the winter five years ago. The thought came by itself when I watched the rush of people on one hill on a day off, seeing how people fall, I decided that in such conditions they can lose no less than on the beach in summer, and what prevents me from walking around with a metal detector in winter? Having chosen a weekday for this, early in the morning, while the children were still at school, and the skiers were at work, I went to one ski-sledge slope, of which there are many in the Moscow region. What did I get as a result? Well, to begin with, it was amusing and exciting to get a metal detector out of a closet in winter and go searching, spring is still far away - and here is a real opportunity for searching. The top of the slope, like the very bottom, is strewn with traffic jams and garbage (those places where not very athletic citizens like to walk with a bottle of beer and stronger). The middle of the slope - for the most part is not intended for searches. slippery, strong drops, but there are also separate sections that you should definitely “roam” with a metal detector - these are sections located below the springboards, where everyone lands and often falls. But the most “catching” zone is usually a little higher than the very bottom of the hill. Apparently, this is due to the fact that when people fall, they slide down almost to the very bottom along with the “lost”, and the “lost” also probably migrate gradually down along with the snow.

Of the finds, I collected most of all, of course - modern trifles (walkers). There were really so many coins that I thought to pay off gasoline for the coming weekend. It seems that the coins are scattered on the hill on purpose, for good luck ... I can imagine how the pockets of those who ride are shaken out when they fall.
I collected corks and beer tongues in sufficient quantities at the bottom and top of the slope and quickly left from there, drawing conclusions. I also found quite a few keys to the locks. If only their owners would be happy if they found them in a timely manner…
But the most interesting thing is that already on the first trip to this slope I found gold and successfully opened the early treasure-hunting season, so to speak. Not far from the very bottom, a little to the side of the slope, in a place where there was quite deep but well-worn snow, I caught a slight signal and raised what do you think? - a gold bracelet! My joy knew no bounds. In addition, on the same day, I also found a gilded watch, but unfortunately they were badly maimed (I hope their owner suffered less) - the glass was broken, there was snow inside and part of the bracelet was missing. After the first experience, I realized that you can search on the hills and even very much, the winter time is for sure!

In the following exits from interesting finds there were: a silver watch, a pendant with a fragment of a chain, a branded Zippo in good condition, a dog tag with an engraving that fell off the collar - SILVER !!!, women's earrings - 7-8 pieces (although only 1 was made of gold and not a single steam room), and of course not counting the many modern coins.

Tips: It is worth walking in the mornings on weekdays, ideally after a good snowfall (there are more losses in loose snow). Dress “properly”, especially pay attention to comfortable shoes and gloves, but if you are lucky with the slope, you will have to sweat knocking out the next 2 rubles 1991 or a gold jewelry from the snow and ice. Watch in advance on weekends, where there are more people and where there are more falls. A large shovel is not needed, but the presence of a “chisel” on the shovel is very desirable (many valuable items froze into rolled ice under a layer of snow). If there are a lot of people - do not interfere with people riding, conflicts and the possibility of being injured and breaking the device from a collision are not worth it! DO NOT DIG TOO DEEP SIGNALS, ONLY SURFACE!!! (i.e. these are summer traffic jams and they are not worth such brutal efforts of an ice ax).

Well, if you manage to get to a good slope early on a weekday, where there are many major skiers and snowboarders on weekends, you are guaranteed good finds! Go ahead and winter will pass faster and more fun.

Freezing areas of rivers and streams
It was a long time ago, now it's hard to remember, most likely, it was one of my first winters already in the status of a treasure hunt and a searcher. While skiing through the forest, I noticed that the bottom of the local stream (or rather, it is a small river) does not freeze, like the stream itself! This is especially true for small and fast-flowing rivers, and especially those flowing from large cities, where they do not freeze due to discharges and other factors. But there are many natural streams that you will find far from the city that are not frozen (most likely thanks to springs).

And so, on one of the winter holidays, I decided to try to look at the bottom of the stream / river. In rubber boots, I put on 3 pairs of socks on my feet, took my first metal detector (Minelab T30) and went on a winter search. I walked to the place in ordinary shoes, and already by the river I put on boots and entered the water. It was unusual and uncomfortable, the metal detector slowed down a little because of the negative temperature, ice kept coming across under my feet and I had to not fall... But anyway, I started the search as I had planned! And here are the first signals. Without a special scoop for beach search, it was very inconvenient to dig targets out of the water from the bottom, even despite the small depth at the search site (no more than 20 cm.).

I threw the bottom rock (a mixture of stones, silt and sand) onto the snow banks and tried to find something there - to be honest, it was very uncomfortable and cold to my fingers. But having adapted a little, things went on and after the first coin of the USSR I was inspired, and after the first imperial coin I thought that the efforts were not in vain ...
I will say right away that the river along which I walked is very close to Moscow, it is historically rich and flows in interesting areas. Therefore, I expected that the finds of coins would be because. I searched near the village, in the lower reaches of which the river flows. Avoiding those places where there are slips now and there are bridges of the modern plan (there is an abundance of garbage) - in other places I came across coins, crosses and horsemeat. The finds, as usual, were concentrated in areas where, apparently, there were old paths and river crossings.
This rivulet (stream) turned out to be almost an ideal testing ground for winter search in the water: Moscow is very close, in winter the water does not freeze and the bottom too, it is more or less convenient to search. silting is small due to the transience, the water depth at the search site is from 10 to 40 cm.
But the search in such conditions is not easy - it is very slippery to get ashore with rubber boots! It's not easy to climb over the rubble with a metal detector, a shovel and in triple-toed boots when you no longer feel your legs.
One way or another, I climbed the river for almost two hours, found a couple of interesting places and at that time dug up a couple of imperial coppers, 5-6 pieces of Soviet trivia, a few crosses and buttons + horsemeat. The gentleman's set was assembled and I went home tired and happy. It’s a pity that I didn’t have the strength to carry a camera with me, I recall with tenderness such experimental winter searches!
After that experience, I went out on similar winter searches twice more. I didn’t find super many coins, but I didn’t return empty either, and besides, in one of the exits I was successfully able to combine the search for fossils in the stones washed by the stream on the slope.

Tips: clothes are everything! The river should be fast-flowing and shallow, preferably with a rocky bottom, plus flow in a densely populated area. Residents of megacities should pay attention to the rivers flowing out of the city - they often do not freeze ... The safety of coins that have lain in the water is often much better than coins from the fields after fertilizers!
In all other respects - this search is not for "home boys", but for real search lovers, for those who have adventure and the excitement of searching in their blood! So I wish you good luck and good finds on a sunny winter day, you just need to get the metal detector out of the case.

ice hole
I myself have not tried this type of search, but one friend on the forum shared his experience and told how he carried out searches in places where a hole is regularly made in villages or simply on an old village pond.

To do this, he needed to construct something like a scoop with holes for sifting, and all this on a long stick, which he lowered into an ice hole or hole and, scooping up the bottom layer, raised it and sifted it with the same scoop. According to the searcher, the search by such a simple method turned out to be very entertaining and quite productive - the main thing is to correctly determine the place where the hole used to be. A dozen coins - was his reward for ingenuity and diligence.

Here I have shared some methods of entertainment and real search with a metal detector in winter. I hope I gave you ideas on how to pass the winter off-season! How to wait out and diversify the winter and spend it with the benefit of a hobby!
